What to do in Trieste with kids

Explore the city with the Hop On Hop Off bus

A good way to explore Trieste is to board the Hop On Hop Off bus, which allows you to reach all the main attractions of the city. The tour starts close to the Molo Audace and Piazza Unità d’Italia, before reaching the hill of San Giusto, the Grand Canal and the Castle of Miramare. During the journey an audio guide provides information and curiosities about the city, but, as you can guess from the name of the tour itself, you can also get off at each of the stops and then go back on the next bus. A fun ride that allows you to discover Trieste with ease, without having to worry about parking or other means of transport.

Take a dip in history in the castles of Trieste

A real castle always has a certain charm, and in Trieste we have two. The first is the famous Castle of Miramare, with its scenic location overlooking the sea and a large park to explore, full of legends and curiosities. But there is also San Giusto, the medieval fortress that dominates Trieste from above and offers, among other things, a splendid view over the whole city. Both castles are not to be missed during your visit to Trieste.

Antonio the dinosaur Trieste

Meet Antonio the dinosaur at the Natural History Museum

Did you know that Trieste is the city of dinosaurs? Nearby, in the paleontological site of the Fisherman’s Village in Duino, was found one of the best preserved dinosaurs in the world. It is named Antonio and 80 million years ago it was a vegetarian dinosaur over 1 meter tall and 4 meters long. He and Bruno, another dinosaur from the same site, are now the stars of the Natural History Museum of Trieste and in good company: here you will also find Carlotta, a great white shark, and many other unique finds that the whole family will love.

Discover the underground world in the Grotta Gigante Cave

Not far from the center of Trieste you can also experience another adventure: descending over 100 meters underground to visit the Grotta Gigante Cave. This impressive karst cave can be explored in about an hour with a guided tour, which allows you to discover more about how stalactites and stalagmites form surrounded by the incredible scenery of the “Great Cave”. No wonder it is one of the most popular attractions of Trieste and the whole region.

Unleash the imagination at the Science Center

Finally, for the most curious kids there is another place not to be missed in Trieste: the Science Center or Immaginario Scientifico. Housed in a historic building in the Old Port of Trieste, this interactive museum is divided into five sections dedicated to different aspects of science and research. Inside there are many exhibitions and workshops, where children and teenagers can learn in an engaging way thanks to pendulums, soap bubbles, whirlpools and many other experiments designed for all ages.
