Trieste’s Barcolana 2026: what to do in the city beyond the regatta

As every year, the atmosphere in Trieste starts to buzz as the Barcolana Sunday approaches. But the “world’s largest regatta“, which fills the Gulf with sails, is only the final moment of a packed programme of events, set to take over the waterfront, squares and streets of the centre in a true city-wide festival running from 1 to 11 October 2026.

For those planning a visit to Trieste in October, there is no need to wait until Sunday to soak up the atmosphere: there is plenty to do beyond the Barcolana race itself.

The Barcolana Village expands

The Barcolana Village 2026 opens on 2 October, the heart of the event on land, with spaces dedicated to sponsors, crews and exhibitors spread across a vast area along the waterfront and Piazza Unità d’Italia. One of the main new features of Barcolana 2026 is the “Outside Village”, which for the first time extends the boundaries of the event as far as Piazza Ponterosso: stands, temporary shops and installations create a route that runs from the waterfront all the way into the centre of Trieste.

Events on the water before the regatta

The on-water programme also gets underway on Friday 2 October with “Barcolana Young“, a regatta for young helmsmen and helmswomen born between 2011 and 2017, which continues throughout the weekend.

On Sunday 4 October, “Barcolana Nuota” can be followed directly from the Rive. The open-water swimming race takes place in the stretch of sea in front of Piazza Unità d’Italia and, at the start at 11:00 am, an exceptional guest will join the field: Olympic champion Gregorio Paltrinieri, ready to swim one nautical mile (1,850 metres) alongside the other participants.

In addition to various competitions and displays of water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing, a number of side regattas are also scheduled in and around Trieste from September onwards. The most interesting, however, are those taking place on the eve of the main race, on Saturday 10 October: “Barcolana Classic“, dedicated to vintage boats, and “Barcolana by Night“, a night-time regatta that is one of the most striking events of the entire calendar.

Barcolana on land: culture, literature and sport

The Barcolana programme extends well beyond the water, bringing together a wide range of activities on land. Among the initiatives most appreciated by the public is “Barcolana: a sea of stories“, a themed literary festival that brings together authors and presentations connected by the worlds of sailing and adventure. Events run from 5 to 10 October at the Casa della Musica in Trieste.

There is also plenty of room for sports, with the new “Barcolana Skate Up” offering workshops led by skateboarding and BMX instructors, and the “Cavana Run Club Barcolana Edition“, an evening run of around 5 km between the Rive and through the Porto Vecchio, with no timing or rankings, that has become a tradition for Trieste’s running community.

The return of the Amerigo Vespucci

Among the most eagerly awaited appearances at Barcolana 2026 is the Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian Navy’s celebrated training ship, which returns to Italy after a world tour lasting several months and docks in Trieste from 8 to 12 October.
