Trieste from above: the viewpoints you should not miss

Trieste is best appreciated from above: the special relationship between the city and the sea becomes clear when seen from one of its many viewpoints, each offering a different perspective on the gulf, the Karst plateau and the rooftops of the historic centre.

From the hill of San Giusto to the most unexpected terraces, here are some of the best panoramic views over Trieste.

The hill of San Giusto: the most classic viewpoint

The hill on which the Castle of San Giusto stands is the historic heart of Trieste and also its most classic viewpoint, given how close it is to the city centre. From its bastions, the view opens over the gulf and the neighbourhoods below: locals recommend coming up here in the evening to watch the sunset, especially in summer when a number of open-air events are held on the hill.

The Vittoria Lighthouse: a landmark overlooking the sea

Inaugurated in 1927, the Vittoria Lighthouse has been one of Trieste’s most recognisable landmarks ever since. It is open to the public between April and November and admission is free, during the times indicated on the official website. Whether you choose to climb the 232 steps or to take the lift, the terrace offers a 360° view over the city and the Gulf of Trieste, stretching as far as Miramare Castle and the Croatian coast on the opposite shore.

The Strada Napoleonica and the Vedetta Italia: a walk with a view

For those who want to combine a panorama with a walk, the Strada Napoleonica is the right choice. Starting from the Obelisk of Opicina, easily reached by car or public transport, the four-kilometre route runs along the edge of the Karst plateau at 350 metres above sea level. At intervals, the vegetation opens up to reveal sweeping views over Trieste and the gulf. It is one of the most popular weekend walks among locals, and it is easy to see why.

From here, it is also possible to follow CAI trail no. 12 and continue to the Vedetta Italia, known as the “terrace of the Karst”: a beautiful viewpoint that remains quiet and uncrowded.

The terrace of the Museo Revoltella: art and panorama

There is also an unexpected view in the heart of the city: simply take the lift to the top floor of the Museo Revoltella. The panoramic terrace, an integral part of the renovation project designed by Carlo Scarpa, hosts events in summer along with a café open until late, from which to watch the sun set over the rooftops of Trieste.
